This place was exactly what I expected – totally overrated. I guess given the neighborhood, they are drawing on the need of travellers wanting familiar or cheap chainlike restaurants. Is it really fair to go to Friday’s and expect a burger that deserves 5 stars?
The staff is super friendly, especially the bar manager, which was the only thing that made this trip enjoyable (well of course the company I keep…). These guys have a decent beer selection, some local and classic favorites. We tried a couple of cocktails, and they were decent – although on the sweet side. The margarita does have a house made sours and comes with a GM floater. The wine list is quite basic – but hey, it is a bbq place.
Foodwise – people seem to think they are cheap. I guess they are cheaper than some of the other spots around, but Blue Pit wins on price and food for me. We ordered the Custom ‘Que – with the ribs and the brisket. First, portions are on par – brisket was smaller, but the ribs were bigger. But, the ribs were St. Louis style – spare ribs, instead of baby back ribs, so I’m not sure that counts. They were fine. Not particularly tender, which is interesting given they are the fattier cut of meat, but good enough. They also have more of sweet tang than I like in my bar-b.
As for the brisket, it has very little flavor and was quite dry. Yes, they have sauces, but they were all the way on the other side of the bar, and not even suggested until we were mostly done. Plus, they pour a little of one on top – which kind of takes the fun out of trying them all.
It comes with two sides – so we opted for our usual at Blue Pit: The mac and cheese and the baked beans. The beans were hands down the best thing on the plate. They were also on the sugary side and I like my sauce a little thicker, but these were good. The mac, though. Please! Please! Let a girl know when you are making basically Velveeta mac and cheese. Sure, they dump a little cheese of some sort and “seasoning” on top and let it brown. Blech. No thank you. Nope. Nope. Nope. Considering the calories – this is NOT WORTH IT.
